Talk:ASCII Corporation

...to create the MSX, the most popular 8-bit home computer standard in the Japanese market.

This doesn't sound like it should be included, but I wasn't sure if I should remove it, since this entry is roughly only 7 sentences long anyway.

What relation does this company have to the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)? It isn't mentioned anywhere in the article. If there's no relation, then this should be made explicit, or at the very least a disambig link should be provided at the top. LordAmeth 10:46, 13 March 2007 (UTC) Reply

I actually agree here and did a quick cursory search of some leads. A quick Google Scholar search for "ASCII Corporation Origin" returns mostly American Standard Code for Information Interchange related articles, essays, and papers. Doing a Google Translate from Japanese seems to return no particular translation, and searching for "Japanese acronym ASCII" doesn't return anything significant in the first couple of result pages.

I tend to see this a potential topic of interest where there is an overlap in technology standards, globalization, and industrial competition. From all the initial impressions, it as if the name was chosen specifically to exploit the association, though information about when the standards organization was founded vs. when the corporation was founded seems to conflict.

It may be worth an academic investment of time to disambiguate in some way and perhaps produce an essay or article in psychology, marketing, and/or technology about conceptual overlaps using the different ASCII entities as a salient exemplar.

The claim that their magazine is "one of the oldest [...] computer-oriented magazines" is inconsistent with the statement that they were founded in 1991. I also dispute the assertion that it's one of the most prestigious; what about, say, Communications of the ACM? I'm going to strike this clause. Metageek (talk) 18:42, 21 August 2008 (UTC) Reply
