Celeste Holm was an American actress and singer, who, for Disney, appeared in various television film related to The Wonderful World of Disney . She also appeared in the Touchstone Pictures film Three Men and a Baby .
Born and raised in Manhattan, Holm traveled often during her youth and attended various schools in the Netherlands, France and the United States. She began high school at the University School for Girls in Chicago, and then transferred to the Francis W. Parker School where she performed in many school stage productions and graduated as a member of the class of 1935. She then studied drama at the University of Chicago before becoming a stage actress in the late 1930s.
Her Broadway debut came with 1938's Gloriana and later appeared in productions of The Time of Your Life, Eight O'Clock Tuesday, Oklahoma!, Bloomer Girl, The King and I, Anna Christie, Invitation to a March, Mame, Candida, Light Up The Sky, Hay Fever, Allegro, and Love Letters.
She transitioned to screen work in the 1940s with Three Little Girls in Blue and later won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in Gentleman's Agreement. Her other films included The Snake Pit, A Letter to Three Wives, All About Eve, The Tender Trap, High Society, Tom Sawyer, and The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover. Her television credits included Honestly, Celeste!, Dr. Kildare, Burke's Law, Nancy, Medical Center, The Streets of San Francisco, Insight, Columbo, Wonder Woman, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, As the World Turns, Archie Bunker's Place, Trapper John, M.D., Falcon Crest, Magnum, P.I., Loving, Cheers, Promised Land, Touched by an Angel, The Beat, as well as the miniseries Backstairs at the White House, and the CBS production of Cinderella with Lesley Ann Warren.
Holm retired from the industry in 2004 and battled health problems in her later years. She suffered a heart attack on July 13, 2012; she died two days later at her Central Park West apartment.
