Kaikilta Wikimedia Commonsiin tallennettavilta tiedostoilta vaaditaan lähde. Älä tallenna ollenkaan sivulla Commons:Bad sources luetelluista lähteistä otettuja tiedostoja, ja ole tarkkana ongelmallisista lähteistä otettujen tiedostojen kanssa.
Jos kyseessä on Internetistä otettu tiedosto, kirjoita URL varsinaisen kuvasivun lisäksi myös sivulle, jolla tiedoston kuvaus on jolla tiedostoa käytetään.
Kuuluisia kuvataiteilijoita ja muitakin taiteilijoita varten on malline {{Creator}}. Jos esimerkiksi kysessä on Albert Edelfeltin tekemä taideteos, malline on {{Creator:Albert Edelfelt}}.
Kuvauksesi näkyy normaalin muokkausyhteenvedon kaltaisena. Se ei siis korvaa nykyisen kuuvaussivun sisältöä. Jos uudella versiolla on toinen lähde, tekijä tai lisenssi, päivitä tiedot tallennuksen jälkeen kuvaussivulle.
Jos tiedosto, jota tallennat, eroaa merkittävästi nykyisesti tiedostosta tai myös tiedoston vanha versio on käyttökelpoinen, on parempi, että tallennat uudet version toiselle nimelle.
Valitse kentän vasemmalla puolella olevasta pudotusvalikosta kunkin kuvauksen kieli. Kenttien alapuolella olevasta "+"-painikkeesta saat lisää mahdollisuuksia eri kielille. Kirjoita kuvaus ainakin englanniksi.
- public domainissa eli tekijänoikeudettomia sekä alkuperämaassa että Yhdysvalloissa
- vapaasti lisensoituja, eli lisensoituja jollain yllä mainitut neljä vapautta antavalla lisenssillä
Kirjoita "Lupa"- kenttään tekijänoikeusmalline tai valitse pudotusvalikosta jokin vaihtoehto. Muussa tapauksessa tiedosto poistetaan. Tekijänoikeusmallineet on listattu sivulla COM:TOM. Lisätietoja on sivulla Commons:Licensing.

If you give a URL as the immediate image source, make sure it's a URL to an image description, or to a web page where the image is used. A link to the plain image file is of no use.

If there is a {{Creator}} template for a famous author, use it. (See the list.) For instance, if you've cropped away a border, say so. Or if you're uploading a larger, but otherwise identical, version of the already existing file, write "Larger version from ", followed by the source of the new version.
Your description will appear as an edit summary; it will not appear on the file description page itself! If the new version comes from a different source, or has a different author or license, please also update the file description page after the upload.
If the new version you want to upload differs substantially from the already existing file, it is almost always better to upload the file under a new name instead of overwriting the existing file.
