Items placed into a smithing table under protection are not protected from other players retrieving them using the formspec window.

additionally if a player not in protection places item in protected smithing table, owner is locked out from placing additional items in, until placed item is removed.

It seems the smithing table does not adhere to protection checks, you may need to open an issue with VoxeLibre for this to be looked into.
