Bye Heading change for SEO #147

I've looked into the titles because I don't like the current h1 on the product pages and we can improve our seo.

The title and h1 are current "Bye Product Name", h2 is "Recommend Category Name" and the h3 is "Product Alternative Name".

Good seo uses of h1, h2 and h3 with the focus keywords. With focus keyword "headings" it could look like this:

h1/title How to use headings on your site

h2 Structuring your headings

h3 How to improve the distribution of your headings

The focus keyword should be something our target audience searches for. Instead of Bye we can use Alternative wich has the highest volume. But there is a lot of competition on that word. Ethical Alternative is the next best suited for swiso. Ofcourse more people search for free or gratis but I don't think that are the people we want to reach.

With that in mind I suggest focus keyword "Ethical Alternatives to Product Name":

h1/title Ethical Alternatives to Product Name

h2: Recommened Ethical Alternatives to Product Name in Category Name

h3: Product Alternative Name

The h1/title and h2 are longer. This can be tweaked a little but a smaller size can give some more room. The h1 could be resized to 3em instead of 5em. With this we can rank on "Ethical Alternative to Product Name" and even "Alternative to Product Name" when we get enough authority.

I don't think we should be playing the SEO game. It's inherently slightly unethical, and the ends don't justify the means (among humans).

Improvements are good, but improvements for SEO purposes aren't. The search algorithms should be tailored to high-quality web pages, not the other way around; and since swiso spreads mostly by word of mouth (from my experience), we don't particularly need SEO to accomplish our goal. Even ignoring the fact that, historically, humans have not been good at remaining uncorrupted by power, this seems like somewhere we can make a stand for relatively little cost.

@wizzwizz4 what do you think of my arguments for the title change? Like I explained this is not SEO for SEO and I agree with you on that point.

The short version is that this is a better copy. For people the title change is an improvement. The title "Bye Product Name" is missing the reason why you should read it. "Ethical Alternatives for Product Name" explain the uniqueness of the page. It's just better copywriting. And that title is also good fit for the people that are searching to switch software.

Being more specific is an improvement. I don't like the Bye.

I'm fine with replacing the "Bye" with "Ethical alternatives to" and changing the font size 🙂 I wouldn't repeat the same keywords in consecutive headings though. This seems redundant to me, and propably also to our users. So I'd propose this:

H1/TITLE - Ethical Alternatives to Product
H2 - Recommended Product category

@Jelv

The short version is that this is a better copy.

But not the best copy. Having an SEO-spam re-wording of the first heading in the second is almost not an improvement over what we had before. brickup's suggestion is better in that regard (though probably also not the best possible).

Thanks for bringing this up, though. I think we'd all got so used to it that we'd stopped seeing the problem.

The h2 with - Recommended Product category - is also much smaller. I think that is a good solution.

Another one that I found that could use some work is the url. It uses /replace/product but you don't use replace product on the page so you will not rank on it. With focus keywords "Ethical alternative" you could change it to /ethical-alternatives/product.

Making the URLs longer doesn't seem like a good thing to me.

Personally, I'd leave the URLs as they are, mainly because they mirror the folder structure of our project. I'd prefer to keep folder structure and URLs in sync to keep it simple 🙂

Also, to me, "Replace xy" seems like a reasonable first try on searching alternatives. 🔍
