I don't think they should be considered the same.
It seems that the www subdomain is becoming less and less common, so it's not hard to imagine a future were someone registers the username www on website.com and ends up with a www.website.com subdomain. So I think it's safer to not make the assumption that www.example.com == example.com.
Note that in your human.json you can vouch for both www.example.com and example.com.

I can vouch for both, but I can't put both URLs in for myself. Both https://brassnet.biz/ and https://www.brassnet.biz will get to my website but will not be handled the same by the extension.
