_JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1 helps (see https://github.com/oracle/visualvm/issues/403, https://github.com/swaywm/sway/issues/595#issuecomment-214131422). These refer to https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8058197 which is marked 'fixed on 9' but clearly it's not fixed with 9.
