LibreWolf Version

151.0.3-1

Operating System

Windows 11

Installation Source / Package

Windows Installer (.exe)

Description

Issue: Since two versions ago, it is not possible to listen to music via LibreWolf on SoundCloud via their website (.com) any more. If you press play the "loading circle" appears shortly on the track’s thumbnail, but then it jumps directly to the next track in line and to the next and so on. I have tried playing several tracks (free or GO+, I have a GO+ account) and it makes no difference.

Done so far: I have deleted the cache and cookies of the browser, reinstalled it and tried different security and performance settings and deactivated the extensions. Still no success.

Note: Everything worked fine with the same browser and settings till a few weeks ago and the issue does not appear on the same device (laptop) with the same SC-account when using the current Vivaldi browser. Issue has also been sent to SoundCloud and as expected their solution is that I should use a different browser.

If you need more info or a short video of what is happening, please let me know!

Could you check what errors you get in the console? Ctrl + Shift + K

You could try asking the support if they changed the required widevine level for playback recently.

With extensions (like uBlock and privacy badger) enabled there are 99+ errors and warnings. When deactivated less, but still some. I then disabled all extensions and even allowed everything that site wanted me to allow, still not working.

Is there a template for best settings in LibreWolf to test a site, so one would get only the relevant errors?

Not sure if this is it, because I am not trying to download, just listen and everything works fine with Vivaldi, even I have also strict privacy rules and extensions enabled and the DRM thing would be a problem there too wouldn't it?

Done. Will update when/if they replied.

Vivaldi is based on Chromium and I assume they have paid the the required licensing fee for DRM to reach a higher level required for restricted playback

Are you not able to play any songs? I just opened soundcloud, without logging in or even enabling DRM, picked one of the first songs that showed up and it worked without issues.

@any1here After your reply I had a closer look again.

So playing songs from the home tab e.g. from the SC buzzing playlist (all independent artists) actually works (not sure if I have tried that before, sorry). Just non of my playlists would play and if I try to listen to a song from the following artists pages directly, nothing would play at all, no matter if the tracks are free or GO+.

Examples nothing works:
https://soundcloud.com/max-richter
https://soundcloud.com/anne-sophie-mutter
https://soundcloud.com/moby
https://soundcloud.com/arminvanbuuren/popular-tracks

Example that makes no sense:
I can listen to this album: https://soundcloud.com/charlottedewittemusic/sets/charlotte-de-witte
I can not listen to this album: https://soundcloud.com/charlottedewittemusic/sets/the-heads-that-know

Even both are free and from the same artist and no matter if I am signed in or not.

Would appreciate if you could try playing some of the tracks mentioned above that don't work for me, to see if it is just me?

I can reproduce the same behavior. I assume that only the latter currently has a higher DRM restriction in place :/

@any1here Thanks! Not good but good to know.

So does this mean it's a LibreWolf "problem", because as you said earlier, they haven't paid the required licensing fee for DRM to reach a higher level required for restricted playback, like Vivaldi maybe has?

Yes, the cost would be ~10ドルk (or even more at this point) for the licensing fee :/

I checked the above links again and https://soundcloud.com/charlottedewittemusic/sets/charlotte-de-witte does not use DRM at all, while https://soundcloud.com/charlottedewittemusic/sets/the-heads-that-know does and likely requires L1 to be played.

@any1here I guess at this point there is nothing more to do, or at least that I could do to solve this, since I am not a coder nor have I 10k.

Thanks a lot for looking into this and helping out!
