Media playback stopped working #2689

I noticed that today media playback in Librewolf doesn't seem to be working. This affects:

  • Built-in Firefox video player (No video with supported format and MIME type found.)
  • Invidious: No compatible source was found for this media.
  • YouTube: video loads forever, displaying just a black rectangle with the loading circle
  • Spotify: clicking "play" doesn't do anything
  • Twitch: This video is either unavailable or not supported in this browser. (Error #4000)

I haven't tried any other websites with media playback. At first I thought this was a problem with the websites in question but I noticed that:

A. This wasn't happening yesterday

B. A common theme in all these new problems is that they are all the attempts at media playback I've made today

I'm using pipewire/wireplumber on Artix Linux. Audio and video playback is working on my system (tested with mpd, mpv, and some games from my Steam library). Pipewire and Wireplumber are running when I check with htop.

Librewolf version: 143.0.4-1

ffmpeg version: n8.0

This started happening today, 06/10/2025, and was not happening yesterday (built-in video player, invidious, and Spotify all used and working yesterday). I did update Librewolf today but the problems started before the update.

Any ideas?

May I ask @ohfp how come if librewolf builds fine with system ffmpeg (on arch/artix 8.0) on runtime librewolf misses ffmpeg 4.4? Are system codecs not used, or not built when building librewolf? Just wondering if there are some binary pieces that can/should be built instead, or if there can/should be an option to use the system codecs instead.

Thanks !

@je-vv it's just a firefox+ffmpeg 8.0 workaround, from arch itself, see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1962139 https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/firefox/-/issues/19 https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/firefox/#:~:text=ffmpeg4%2E4
