Hello World!
Who?
Hi.
I'm Stefan, born and hiding in
Vienna, Austria.
It was in the 90s and I was a kid when I got my first PC ...
and they didn't know what they had done to me by opening
the gates to this new world.
At the beginning there was DOS
and QBasic.
Then came Pascal,
Windows and
Visual Basic.
Assembly language
made me a retro-fan when I still was young.
Linux,
PHP and
JavaScript
showed me in parallel how to "communicate".
And then I found back to C
and C++. My true love for so many years.
I'm a software developer ... and I guess I will be one until I die.
Because I love to be one. Just having the power to change things with words.
This strange cosmos of bits and bytes shapes our real world now for decades and it moves every day while some rules stay.
Words are in my not-so-humble opinion our most inexhaustible source of magic.
Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it.
(Albus Dumbledore)
Why?
So many lines of code ... and I'm not allowed to talk about them,
or show them, and I'm not permitted to improve or save them.
This is how companies rape passion and creativity.
It's part of the game, I cannot change these rules, and ...
I also need their paychecks to survive.
But in the darkness of the night I'm free.
I can reimplement, rewrite, change and create new stuff from
what I've learned in the past.
This is what OpenSource means to me, and how it deliberates my mind. How could it take me so long to arrive in this safe space?
What?
I'm working on my GATE framework, another reinvention of the wheel, just for fun and to study interfaces, but also to do some tasks for me.
boost or GTK are too bloated, too dependent to too few systems.
So I'm doing what we did 30 years ago:
Code it myself, wrap it, break it, fix it.
Thanks!
Thanks to all others out there who published, contributed to,
and developed OpenSource projects.
You are my guides, my teachers.
And thanks to Codeberg and it's amazing community, that preserves freedom and independence from blood-sucking market-interests and brainless AI zombies.
Thanks for just being here.
