I think now that I better support the project in other forms than being an active contributor. You can close this. Still, if you are interested, you can see my replies to the survey in prior versions of this issue.

[User Research](https://jdittrich.github.io/userNeedResearchBook/) is about observing how you use tools when creating Free Software. Ideally we would sit with you and take notes. This would give us clues about the challenges you are facing, how you overcome them. And also what you find useful, the patterns that help you be an efficient Free Software contributor.
This survey is a kind of shortcut that saves you and us valuable time. All you are expected to do is tell the story of what you did, as you remember it. Just the facts, in chronological order. There is no need to write down a story that is nice to read: bullet points are perfectly fine.
As much as you'd like to give your interpretation of why something was good or difficult, this is not in scope for this survey: it is all about collecting the facts that make your own personal experience unique. All the surveys will then be compiled and analyzed to get a idea of the [mental models](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_model) common to most Free Software contributors.
The Forgejo roadmap will use this output to figure out what matters most, what should be adressed first and why, based on factual evidence that you provided. It would be faster to rely on the decision of project leads. But, however brilliant they are, it will only reflect their own view of the world and not the diversity of Free Software contributors.
It takes time to build a user centric roadmap and there is no guarantee that what matters to you most will end up there. But it also is the best way for your voice to be heard and make a difference.

# My Free Software contributions
* I got in touch with programming at the age of 14
* I loved doing things in QBasic
* I studied urban planning because I love cities
* I missed programming
* I started making websites using nothing but a text editor and an FTP client
* I made "professional" (haha) HTML table layouts
* I made [funny things using JavaScript](https://stadtkreation.de/en/sandbox/) (see the oldest projects)
* I learned CSS
* I learned PHP
* I developed my own PHP-based web CMS
* I got in touch with open source web CMS and tried different ones
* I mainly work with WordPress since more than a decade now
* I wrote my own WordPress themes
* I developed a large number of WordPress plugins
* But (...) everything was stored only locally and I did not use any version control system (except a very redundant version folder structure)
* I learned the basic usage of Git only in 2020
* I joined GitHub
* I joined Bitbucket
* I joined Codeberg
* I love Codeberg
* I started a to study GIScience (part-time distance learning Master's programme)
* I started to learn Python and R
* I would like to be an experienced contributor and a professional programmer
* I (feel like I) am neither an experienced contributor, nor a professional programmer (not yet)
* I want my own server to be able to play around with server-side scripting (outside of the normal webhosters' "closed shop")
* I want to make many more things using Git and an open Git hosting paltform
* I want to contribute to open source GIS projects
* I don't know what my exact role could be as a member here
* I recently switched from Windows to Linux Mint on all my desktop machines
* But I want to support the project and offer my help
* I won't be sad if there's not a good place for me as an active member
* But I want to thank you for the Forgejo launch as a reaction to the sad Gitea news
## A successfull contribution
Here's the important point: I love community projects, but so far I used the Git hosting platforms only for hosting my own stuff, often related to specific projects and very often not very suitable for community contributions. I love looking for typos or logical errors in the docs. See here:
https://github.com/UNIGIS-Salzburg/UNIGIS_issue_tracker/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aclosed
## A difficult contribution
See here https://github.com/winnewoerp/Overpass2Geojson
## A failed contribution
So far: I failed because I didn't even know how to contribute in most cases (except starting issues).
If active membership of Forgejo requires coding contributions, I am not sure if I can help (or I would have to learn many more things). But enhancing UI/UX and doing web development stuff is something where I could help.
