It is my understanding that the website available for the launch should be a sensible first step towards a long term vision regarding the visual identity. It should also, to the extent possible before the launch, take into account the launch strategy.

I started a note pad for drafting website content based on the Astrowind visual design theme.

Here's my draft for the Hero section:

Forgejo Hero Section

Hero

Hero slogan

Beyond coding. We forge.

Hero highlight

Old:

Forgejo is a self-hosted lightweight software forge.
Easy to install and low maintenance, it just does the job.

Forgejo is a self-hosted software development platform.
We make forging software fun and collaboration easier.

Rationale: The term "software forge" (or "code forge") isn't well-known to most people. "Easy to install and low maintenance" is a product highlight, "just does the job" is not very descriptive.

In the second sentence "forging software" hints at the inclusive process that is involved. It is part of the vision of The Software Guild. Avoids app-oriented "software forge" (that can be mentioned later). The forging involves inclusion and collaboration. By taking away the chores development becomes more fun ("The Joy of Coding").

Hero summary

Old:

Brought to you by an inclusive community under the umbrella of Codeberg e.V., a democratic non-profit organization, Forgejo can be trusted to be exclusively Free Software. It is a "soft" fork of Gitea with a focus on scaling, federation and privacy.

Under the umbrella of Codeberg and crafted by an inclusive community, Forgejo is free software that offers reliable tools for your project development. Besides being scalable, secure and privacy-first, Forgejo is dedicated to fully decentralize the development process.

Hero philosophy

Old:

Philosophy: Simplicity, Best Practices and High Performance

Philosophy: Ease of use, Productivity, Collaboration and Guidance

Rationale: What is meant with "Simplicity"? Saying "Best Practices" is too abstract and arguably mostly still in the hands of the end-user. For which audience is "High Performance" one of the 3 main product philosophy traits? For hosting providers? Even for Codeberg something like e.g. Resilience might be more appropriate then.

I have formulated from end-user perspective. Ease of use is offered by the intuitive UX/UI and for power users CLI's and API's. Collaboration is what Forgejo stands out on, by allowing anyone involved in the software development process to participate. The Guidance is what leads to following best-practices. Productive is what the tools allow you to be. Forgejo doesn't stand in your way, seamlessly supports your work processes, making them effecient, and automates chores.

Just from looking at the picture would it be possible to slightly brighten up the mascot?

The contrast is fairly low, and at least for me (though I'm partially color blind), even on a good (bright, good contrast and calibrated) oled monitor, the hero almost disappears in the background (the glowing blob is bright enough, it's just the gray in gray of the background and mascot)

Thanks for the suggestions @circlebuilder, I'll take a look at it this evening (tomorrow morning for you).

@gapodo I would also like to brightness the mascot slightly but I don't have the source files for the transparent / darkened version, only the opaque flattened PNG provided by @foxlet.

@foxlet, are you able to provide the editable source files for this darkened mascot image? Thanks!

Given that forgejo/website#37 has been merged and the website is live and is considered ready for launch, I think we can close this.

Any future changes should be suggested on the website issue tracker.
