With this issue 'show in dock' is toggled off but the icon is still visible in the dock.

Steps to reproduce:

  • toggle 'show in dock' off
  • click 'done'
  • click the close window button - Cmd + Q does not trigger it
  • relaunch eduVPN
  • observe how the icon is now visible in the dock while 'show in dock' is toggled off in settings
With this issue 'show in dock' is toggled off but the icon is still visible in the dock. Do we know why this setting is here in the first place?

Edit: on macOS 15 I can't seem to be able to figure out what it does except not show the eduVPN / Edit / View / Window / Help anymore in the top bar when I turn it off. It is always visible in the dock.

It's there for someone who wants to run the app only from the status menu. I don't think it's particularly useful, and will be happy to remove that option :).

Users like it to be able to start/stop VPN via status menu and switch profiles. Other VPN products also offer such functionality

If it stays, it needs to fixed so that it actually works! It wasn't exactly clear what it is was supposed to do, but maybe only because it didn't work.

Also note that there is another bug as mentioned before: if you foreground the app, the eduVPN menu in the top bar is never available, it remains the one from "Finder", so for example you can never check the version of the app...

@douwe3998 I was not able to reproduce the problem in 4.0.7 (2309) in macOS 26.0.1. Are you using 4.0.7 (2309)?

@fkooman The eduVPN menu will be available on foregrounding only if 'Show in Dock' is enabled (that's how macOS works). If 'Show in Dock' is disabled, then the user wants to use the app exclusively through the status menu, so he'll need to use the status menu for the version as well (through the 'About' window).

@roopc I was the orginal submitter of the issue, and @douwe3998 managed to reproduce it. I'm on 4.0.7 (2309) but MacOS 15.7.4.

I think hiding the icon is a relevant feature. Users generally don't need/want to see apps that always run in the background in the dock.

I'll install macOS 15.7.4 and try to reproduce it.
