I've asked about this in IRC before, but I feel like this is a better place to bring it up and track it.

I think foot should have ways for users to make donations or provide sponsorship over time. For people without the terminal emulator or wayland know-how, like me, it can be a good way to show gratitude and to ensure the project stays viable long-term.

Here are some ideas. You could certainly support multiple of them.

  • GitHub Sponsors, given that it has zero fees (covered by them) and a significant network effect
  • Liberapay, which seems to have stronger ties to open source
  • Open Source Collective, which seems like a fancier version of Liberapay with an emphasis on transparency and organizations

There's certainly many more ways, like directly accepting payments via Stripe, Bitcoin, Paypal, etc. My suggestion would be to use an existing platform so you don't have to add overhead for yourself.

One important detail is that I think you should end up accepting both one-time donations as well as continued sponsorships, e.g. monthly. GitHub supports both, for example.
