Description of Bug and Steps to Reproduce

Using foot server desktop shortcut installed on the system and enlisted in the KDE Plasma autostart jobs.

Open new terminal windows calling footclient.
I usually have one open but regularily close all open foot terminals.
After a while I notice I cannot open new terminals anymore.

Relevant logs, stacktraces, etc.

A look into journalctl --user --unit app-foot\\x2dserver@autostart.service as indicated by the KDE Plasma autostart job reveals:

Sounds like there may be a memory leak. The "crash" is most likely just foot detecting it's out of memory, and asserting on it. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce. It's likely that there's something you're doing that causes the memory leak. We need to figure out what that is. There's no easy way, besides watching the foot server's memory usage and try to reproduce the leak.

FWIW, I cannot reproduce it at all. This means we won't be able to do anything about this, until either:

  • Someone figures out the exact details to reproduce the issue
  • Someone who can reproduce it gets a usable backtrace, with symbols and line numbers

Foot uses threads to speed up rendering. The default is to use as many threads as you have logical cores/threads. See the workers option in foot.ini.

Sounds like there may be a memory leak. The "crash" is most likely just foot detecting it's out of memory, and asserting on it. Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce. It's likely that there's something you're doing that causes the memory leak. We need to figure out what that is. There's no easy way, besides watching the foot server's memory usage and try to reproduce the leak. FWIW, I cannot reproduce it at all. This means we won't be able to do _anything_ about this, until either: * Someone figures out the exact details to reproduce the issue * Someone who can reproduce it gets a usable backtrace, with symbols and line numbers > OT: That are quite a lot of threads... is that correct or are these leftovers not cleaned up after the window closes? I should mention that I regularly run foot, including the server, under valgrind. There are currently no known memory leaks.

Foot uses threads to speed up rendering. The default is to use as many threads as you have logical cores/threads. See the workers option in foot.ini.

Yes, the renderer threads are per window instance.

I've seen the config mentions a monospace font.
In case the bug has something to do with font handling or rendering I want to add the local fonts configuration:

I think it'll fix the crash, but I can't be sure since I haven't been able to reproduce this issue myself (font is not related).
