Icon for shop=chemist (household cleaning, personal hygiene, cosmetics) #1827

The current icon is totally off as based on a wrong understanding of POI as a "chemistry lab supplies" (#1746 (comment))

over-the-counter drugs, personal hygiene (toothpastes, shampoos, soaps etc.), cosmetics (usually cheaper ones), and household cleaning products. The exact product mix will vary from country to country.

Need a better idea for an icon (should be descriptive and understandable in a small size).

The tube in your last draft there is already pretty good. The brush or comb visually and logically seems a bit too ambiguous to me.

I think the one with the tube and little container, that @patepelo marked there in the bottom row, would be perfect, but it of course would need to be in our simplified style.

Its quite good! Though for me its not obvious whats the second item - a soap bar?
Maybe it could be some cleaning liquid or liquid detergent bottle? Some of them have quite characteristic shape, especially the ones for toilet bowl cleaning.

It's a generic cosmetics container (like used for cremes and some cosmetics). The association with a soap bar is fine with me too though 😄

The problem with cleaning liquid or liquid detergent bottles would be the size difference. The objects on the icon need to have a realistic size ratio. So the tube would need to be significantly smaller, which basically would make it unrecognisable as a tube on the icon.

The items don't necessary should have proportionate sizes, its a symbolic image after all.
E.g. we have keys and spanners the size of bicycle / car / motorcycle for vehicle rentals and repair stations :)

Maybe there could be a cleaning brush or sponge instead of a box?

It helps people recognising them though, if they are similar to reality, and the example with the spanner is kind of a special case.
The cleaning brush/sponge could work. The soap bottle maybe.
Just having cleaning products is too specific. Here for example such stores have 30% hair/shower/personal hygiene, 30% beauty products, 10% cleaning, 10% medical, 10% (healthy) food, 10% rest. But in other places around the world (and probably also depending on the chain) it is very different. So I think there is some benefit of being generic here, because that allows people to imagine whatever fits best for them. The tube for example could be anything of toothpaste, hair styling gel, body lotion, cosmetics, medical creme, sunscreen, special cleaning gel etc.

Yeah but the icon shouldn't be confused with a cosmetics shop and cleaning products seem to be the most reliable differentiator.

I would look for something along these lines for easy readibility when small:

The problem with adding a toothbrush to the tube is that in my opinion the symbol then looks too dental-focused. More like a dental hygienist (or even dentist, if people don't remember the teeth symbol).

Yeah it becomes too focused on one thing, its better to have something else for the second object, e.g. maybe a liquid soap bottle will do or something from the "household cleaning" category.

Nice! I like the soap bottle one more. IMO its more recognizable esp. when small.
