Topologically incorrect polygons / lines simplification leads to gaps and other artifacts #1172

Describe the issue

When looking at a downloaded map of west Slovenia the map appears in a rectangular grid as shown in the picture.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Download map Slovenia - West
  2. Zoom in on Slovenia
  3. The more you are zoomed out (seeing the Slovenia map and not world map) the more is the rectangular grid visible

Expected behaviour

The map should look connected as all the others do.

Polygons are simplified for the overview zoom levels and at the moment the simplification algo doesn't take into account that there are adjacent polygons and there should be no gap between them (seamless).

I.e. the current simplification algo is topologically incorrect.

If its thick then it might overlay onto nearby features (roads, etc) that are actually outside of the forest (or whatever other area) :)

So its going to be topologically incorrect too, but in a different fashion :)

AFAIK no one is working on this one at the moment. The effort to fix it is high, while impact is relatively low.

Its quite an interesting piece of work though - might involve smart algorithms and new interesting approaches!

If someone is interested to work on this one - PRs are welcome!
