Hello everyone!
Better late than never - this issue is dedicated to refine Logo-Finalist 3 - "Windy-Road-Pin" from this issue: #78
drawing

The goal here is:

  • to collect feedback
  • iterate on refinement ideas
  • maye play with color-versions (as an addition to the monochrome main logo)

Feel free to come up with your own versions/refinements - I would love to see them! ❤️
All the "iterations" I post here are just ideas it does not mean, that I prefer them over the "original" version :)

Based on this comment I played around with versions that don't include the humans symbolizing the community-aspect of CoMaps: #78 (comment)

Iteration 1: Removed the humans and replaced them with the navigation Arrow

Maybe try to put a combined C-O circle into the pin.

I have tried a bit more abstract version, where i moved the pin a bit out of view and the road up. I like that it's "just a simple squiggle". And that if you stare at it a lot you may see the white "C" and green "M".

Iteration 9: Inspired by the the idea from @riadok I also tried a more scaled version of the OG-Design.
I personally prefer the abstractness from riadok, but I wanted to post it anyways :)

Feel free to share your feedback until tomorrow and I will try to create a "final" refined Version tomorrow in the evening.
My current state of mind leans towards using either:

  • the original design
  • Iteration 1
  • the suggestion from @riadok

What do you think? Any suggestions/wishes?

Is there any way to simplify the path so that it's not as thin at the end?

Original Version

Monochrome:
drawing

What I personally like:

  • it is still kind of "simple"
  • it has a nice flow (to my eyes) and balance
  • it includes a Pin and a windy road, which both communicate "Maps/Navigation-App"
  • the human figures communicate the "Community-Aspect" of CoMaps
  • I think this shape is unique/recognizable

I also created some MockUps:

We need to finalize the criteria for the vote.

Since the focus right now is on the GA release, the logo voting will be postponed for now, which will give more time for work to continue on variations and finalization, without a really short time constraint.

Watch #78 for further updates.

I like the CoMaps_Windy-Road-Pin_abstract.svg from @riadok the most. It's minimal and symbolizes a clear journey: the start, the winding road, and the destination marked by an abstract pin representing the goal. I think the human figures are unnecessary and clutter the design. However, I'm uncertain how this will appear as an actual app icon on my phone screen.

Looking at my phone now, I realized that the most attractive icons all have a solid white background with a simple symbol in the middle. This design would actually be the opposite of that approach. The abstract road design uses more complex paths and there's no clear border to define a solid background — the organic shape flows to the edges, making it harder to achieve that clean, contained look that makes icons immediately recognizable.

Despite these concerns, I still like this one the most. Maybe it's partly because it's different from what I would usually go for — there's something appealing about breaking away from the conventional approach and choosing something more distinctive, even if it challenges typical design principles. The same could be said about forking a project and working in your free time for something greater than yourself.

Hi @nathanael thank you for your feedback! 👍
I created some quick MockUps using IconKitchen - maybe this helps you evaluate the abstract Icon better!
I do also quite like this more abstract approach, but it has not fully clicked for me yet - If I find the time I might experiment with it some more :)

Uh, actually — that looks pretty good. I like it. Thanks. If this comes into the final round I will surely vote for this or something similar (if you find time to experiment with it a little bit more)

SUBMIT FOR VOTING
Sadly I did not find time to experiment any further so I am submitting the original design - I hope that is alright for everyone :)

So attached are the two versions for you @yannikbloscheck

I'm very happy the original design goes in.

I think the group icon is important to convey the cooperative idea behind it. - The only one I liked better was iteration 9 - a little more abstract, but the relevant shapes get more space while still being fully recognisable.
