[Bug]: App keeps disconnecting #108

Please confirm that:

  • I have searched the issues and didn't find my bug or an answer to my question
  • My bug is about JetBird and not something upstream

What is your JetBird version?

1.5.1

What make/model is your device?

Motorola Edge 50 Fusion

What OS and version are you running?

Android 15 (HelloMoto)

What happened?

I would like my devices to be constantly connected to my Netbird VPN.
However, after a couple of hours I clicked "connect" on my Jetbird app, despite it being set as "unrestricted" in background battery optimizations, and despite its VPN being marked as "always on" in the device's network settings, it disconnects and I see a "disconnected from always on vpn" notification.
If I then open again Jetbird and press connect, it will re-connect immediately, no additional login required.

At first I thought it was a misconfiguration of my Netbird instance, but then I tested the same instance on other devices (linux netbird client, iOS netbird app,...) and there I don't have the same issue, so I think it's a problem in the android app.
Must be noticed that the official Netbird android app also has the same issue.

I also tried enabling the logging both for Jetbird and Netbird in the app, with all the toggles that could be enabled turned on, but every time I receive that "disconnected from always on vpn" notification if I open netbird I don't see all the logs I was seeing after I initially connected, and I just see the two lines pasted below.
To me it seems like if the app crashed or something (it's the only reason I can think for the logs disappearing), but I'm not an expert at all so I don't know.

Did someone else encountered this issue? Is there a known fix I missed when trying to troubleshoot?

Yes, please see this upstream issue. JetBird is behind by a few commits - I will try and update soon. If it is really bothering you, you may downgrade to v1.4.6 as that seems to be more stable but uses an older NetBird version (v0.58.1).

If JetBird is killed by Android, it will clear the logs from the logs screen but you may still be able to retrieve them through adb.

If JetBird crashes, and you have notifications enabled, it will send you a notification saying it crashed and when you tap it you will be able to see the stacktrace and upload it here.

Ah ok so the issue is upstream, good to see that they're working on a fix (doesn't seem to be resolved yet on the issue you linked, if I'm not wrong).

I have notifications enabled but I haven't seen any crashed notification from Jetbird.

I've tried to downgrade to v1.4.6 in the meantime, to see if the issue persists. I'll let you know.

In the meantime, thanks for your work!

Do you still see this issue in v1.7.0?

Do you still see this issue in [`v1.7.0`](https://codeberg.org/bg443/JetBird/releases/tag/v1.7.0)?

hey, sorry, I forgot to update you in the end.
Yes unfortunately I’m still experiencing the same issue with the new version, and I was experiencing it also with the older one you suggested to try 😔

I didn’t re-checked the logs after updating to the new version tho, so I don’t know if maybe this time there should be something more informative there. If so (or if there is anything else I could do to help you troubleshoot) please let me know.

Ok thanks for letting me know.

I think there is not much I can do on my end unfortunately so I will try to keep JetBird up to date with upstream core and hopefully it improves.
