I would suggest my changes here.

keep using the @Workstation package group, that may add bloat but reduce searching for missing stuff.

remove

  • gnome-shell-extension-background-logo
  • gnome-shell-extension-window-list
  • gnome-classic-session

replace with flatpaks:

  • (gnome-logs)

  • (gnome-calculator)

  • gnome-font-viewer

  • gnome-extensions-app (replace with com.mattjakeman.ExtensionManager)

  • gnome-characters

  • eog (maybe replace with loupe or gwenview)

  • evince

  • cheese (replace with snapshot?)

add (flatpaks) (maybe in yafti with presets but customizable)

gnome

  • com.github.neithern.g4music
  • io.github.celluloid_player.Celluloid
  • org.gnome.NetworkDisplays
  • org.gnome.SimpleScan
  • org.gnome.Snapshot
  • org.gnome.SoundRecorder
  • org.gnome.gitlab.YaLTeR.VideoTrimmer

general

  • org.keepassxc.KeePassXC
  • org.libreoffice.LibreOffice
  • org.mozilla.Thunderbird
  • org.gimp.GIMP
  • org.inkscape.Inkscape

some are very optional

special case: firefox needs to be installed either from some 3rd party repo, or in a distrobox (not good for RAM usage) or from the mozilla website. Automating this would be nice, especially creating a desktop entry with an icon. The icon could be added to the image to have that work ootb.

checkout my list of recommended apps for inspiration. Most of the above apps are the best of their category, regarding portals etc

I just tried and Gimp Nightly from the GNOME Nightly flatpak repo works too! Really great to have this separation between OS and apps

The replacement list appears fine, but I'll need to check on the difference in image size. With a GNOME runtime, it wouldn't be difficult to change Chromium back to GNOME Web again.

Would you mind drafting a Yafti config with the rest?

Hi, yes if you preinstall them in the image that is true. I assumed this would all be done by the user, with yafti or manually

Done!

uBlue places them in a structure like this:

./files/usr/share/ublue-os/firstrun/yafti.yml

I collected a bunch of apps, separating them into categories. I tested like all the main Flatpaks out there, and on my personal KDE system use a bunch of GNOME apps as they are simply better. The same with some "community GTK apps" like G4Music and others that are way better than what GNOME offers.

Such a list may get out of scope quickly, so here are some ideas for criteria:

  • must follow secure practices like explained here
  • must be either a core, well maintained, essential GNOME or KDE app
  • or a well known FOSS app (Like Libreoffice, KeepassXC) with good Linux support or focus (like Ardour or Zrythm)
  • or a client for an important task, like secure messaging platforms (where there is a bunch of 3rd party clients simply to avoid electron)
  • or an app for a secure service that is kinda fine, like all the Electron messaging apps listed

Most of that looks fine, I have a few changes:

  • Use the System Flathub installation
  • Replace Celluloid with VLC in the general section
  • Sushi (Nautilus Previewer): users might not be familiar with Nautilus/Files
  • Add OnlyOffice to office section
  • Add Celluloid to multimedia section
  • Remove the Electron qualifier from the social apps section
  • Add Calibre to entertainment section
  • Add a games section (Steam, Heroic, ProtonUpQt, supertuxkart, kpatience, space cadet pinball), Steam is essential proprietary software for gaming

thanks for the reply.

  1. In my case the system flathub does not work, because of read-only filesystem issues. If we can get it to work I am all for it, but then a polkit rule allowing nonwheel users to update flatpaks, would be needed for usability
  2. VLC is unofficial and has no Wayland support. Celluloid is really great, has portal support, pipewire, wayland native, no permissions etc. Have a look at my "recommended flatpak apps" repo.
  3. That can be renamed for sure, on GNOME should be automatically selected
  4. Onlyoffice is an electron app, but for sure adding it to the selection can be fine. Is it fully FOSS?
  5. That social apps list is complicated. I would like to keep the custom clients there, but yeah, repeating Electron looks strange
  6. good point
  7. also good point

When doing that list, I wondered what your target audience is. Should it be a general "have fun and use Linux" distros? Or should it be an enterprise distribution?

I think adding good categories for everything could be good for a nice onboarding. I left games out, as they were too "unprofessional".

I would also add "cameractrls" to the list. It is very useful for easily configuring the webcam, works like a charm

  1. That's strange. In my case, there is a polkit prompt when both wheel and non-wheel users try to install from the system flathub. Can you try installing something via CLI with the system flathub? What is the output of flatpak list?
  2. After trying Celluloid, I think you're right. Celluloid should stay in the general section, but VLC is powerful and should be added to the multimedia section
  3. 👍
  4. The clients and backend are FOSS+CLA, and there is a proprietary "enterprise server"
  5. 👍

The target audience is desktop users who want a reliable system. Browser-only users, new Linux users, enterprise-lite, etc. This should be usable by students, professionals, gamers, and anyone else. I love the idea of a ChromeBook, but would like greater software compatibility and a baseline of privacy.

Yes, categories are useful. That's a good point, perhaps the games section should be limited to kpatience and space cadet pinball. Those who want to game can find Steam themselves.

cameractrls could be added to the multimedia section.

update from C10s alpha2:

system flatpaks work

I think keeping the recommended apps to purely functional ones makes sense. KDE Discover will advertise everything that is available, and I think KDE Welcome also has a link to open Discover. This outsources work and the recommendations there are dynamic
