This community member, @jakeg, tried to integrate the Codeberg-supplied SVGs, but it did not work out because of the size of the icon. The community member has managed to achieve a visually similar result that works better for their (and, presumably, others') circumstances. Should we figure out how to incorporate that here (while respecting licensing and everything)?

SVGs scale fine usually, I don't get how scale can be an issue. Maybe I'm missing anything?

I spotted logo versions in that thread that are not our logo and should not be incorporated at all. As for dark/bright background; that's why we provide extra versions of the logo.

I'm not entirely sure what the problem is. ...OH!
...it is late and I now re-read the whole thing, if the filesize itself is a problem, there are ways to make svg more compact.

Find attached some results (72% smaller files) of using a software called "Oh My SVG" with a certain set of settings. Maybe that helps?

ACK. Thanks for not disabling the issue tracker around 6 months ago, this place seems to be appropriate for making inquiries like this.

I think an important question to ask is whether it'd be a good idea to include compressed SVGs in that repository as well.

Pinging @brobr and @jakeg from the original thread: If you don't mind me asking, do you think that this sort of solution (either the software or the files that were supplied here just now) would've worked out for you?

Hi, I responded in the other thread and tried to explain in more detail what the problem is from a website-builder's point of view (not that of a designer). See Codeberg/Community#976 (comment)

As you might understand the code of the codeberg-logo_icon_white-compressed-filesize.svg (see below) is still far off from what can be done to get instructions for a simplified image. These instructions provide code to create a button for a link.

I have tested whether it could replace the simple svg-tag in the 'conf.py' (in the code example of Codeberg/Community#976 (comment)).

codeberg-logo_icon_white-compressed-filesize.svg:

<svg width="16" height="16" viewBox="0 0 4.2333332 4.2333335" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><defs><linearGradient xlink:href="#a" id="b" x1="42519.285" y1="-7078.7891" x2="42575.336" y2="-6966.9307" gradientUnits="userSpaceOnUse"/><linearGradient id="a"><stop style="stop-color:#fff;stop-opacity:0" offset="0"/><stop offset=".49517274" style="stop-color:#fff;stop-opacity:.30000001"/><stop style="stop-color:#fff;stop-opacity:.30000001" offset="1"/></linearGradient></defs><path style="font-variation-settings:normal;opacity:1;vector-effect:none;fill:url(#b);fill-opacity:1;stroke:none;stroke-width:3.67846;stroke-linecap:butt;stroke-linejoin:miter;stroke-miterlimit:2;stroke-dasharray:none;stroke-dashoffset:0;stroke-opacity:1;paint-order:stroke markers fill;stop-color:#000;stop-opacity:1" d="M42519.285-7078.7891a.76086879.56791688 0 0 0-.738.6739l33.586 125.8886a87.182358 87.182358 0 0 0 39.381-33.7636l-71.565-92.5196a.76086879.56791688 0 0 0-.664-.2793z" transform="matrix(0.06551432,0,0,0.06551432,-2.232417,-1.431776) matrix(0.37058478,0,0,0.37058478,-15690.065,2662.0533)"/><path style="opacity:1;fill:#fff;fill-opacity:1;stroke-width:17.0055;paint-order:markers fill stroke;stop-color:#000" d="M11249.461-1883.6961c-12.74 0-23.067 10.3275-23.067 23.0671 0 4.3335 1.22 8.5795 3.522 12.2514l19.232-24.8636c.138-.1796.486-.1796.624 0l19.233 24.8646c2.302-3.6721 3.523-7.9185 3.523-12.2524 0-12.7396-10.327-23.0671-23.067-23.0671z" transform="matrix(0.06551432,0,0,0.06551432,-2.232417,-1.431776) matrix(1.4006354,0,0,1.4006354,-15690.065,2662.0533)"/></svg>

Alas, this did not work (but see below); although the webpages included the svg code, no icon was displayed.

Increasing the size to 24 by 24 did not help, although the link is 'seen' when the pointer hovers over it.

EDIT: When checking the web page in 'dark' mode, the icon does show ;-) (jakeg's one is on the left, the official codeberg-logo on the right).

Can you make a version that displays on a light background as well?

I think I understand the issue better now.

I'm fine with the sport of optimizing a SVG that to the smallest size, if it still looks exactly the same. But I don't code, I design. I don't know what information is redundant, how browsers react to missing information and so on.

So as long as the rewritten SVG meets these requirements it is cool:

  • The original logo consist of 12 nodes, 1 color and 1 gradient.
  • The resulting image needs to look identical.

Can you make a version that displays on a light background as well?

No. The blue version works "OK-ish" on most backgrounds as long as the contrast is good enough:

image

But as that's not always the case I provided an extra version. That is the whole point. I didn't come up with two versions to have more variety. It would be totally cool if one version could handle all backgrounds well.

To show you you why the gray icon is never the best (but sometimes not the worst) here is an overview:

image

No single version works perfectly all the time.
See how towards the left Blue wins, and towards right White wins?
Gray NEVER wins. I don't think it is a good idea to promote a logo that is never the best version of itself.

Finally: if you take your sport to optimize seriously I bet you'll figure out how to change the color and gradient values of the SVG via CSS, technically remaining one image. But as I said, I'm not a coder.

It seems more constructive to focus on what works than on what wins and the <svg></svg> what is on offer 'officially' doesn't work as a button-icon.

Especially not in a very relevant use-case, on a white background. On top of that, in a web-context, blue often stands for an 'active link' and is not a functional color to have as a starting point for a button linking to other pages.

That's what has been communicated. With examples of the icon in the context of a widely used Sphinx theme (furo) that is developed by others (praydung) and therefore comes with confinements set by their coding. In this theme, the restriction for button-icons is that only 1 color is definable by css.

This works for the react version or the github button image used in the furo theme:

<svg stroke="currentColor" fill="currentColor" stroke-width="0" viewBox="0 0 16 16">
<path fill-rule="evenodd" d="M8 0C3.58 0 0 3.58 0 8c0 3.54 2.29 6.53 5.47 7.59.4.07.55-.17.55-.38 0-.19-.01-.82-.01-1.49-2.01.37-2.53-.49-2.69-.94-.09-.23-.48-.94-.82-1.13-.28-.15-.68-.52-.01-.53.63-.01 1.08.58 1.23.82.72 1.21 1.87.87 2.33.66.07-.52.28-.87.51-1.07-1.78-.2-3.64-.89-3.64-3.95 0-.87.31-1.59.82-2.15-.08-.2-.36-1.02.08-2.12 0 0 .67-.21 2.2.82.64-.18 1.32-.27 2-.27.68 0 1.36.09 2 .27 1.53-1.04 2.2-.82 2.2-.82.44 1.1.16 1.92.08 2.12.51.56.82 1.27.82 2.15 0 3.07-1.87 3.75-3.65 3.95.29.25.54.73.54 1.48 0 1.07-.01 1.93-.01 2.2 0 .21.15.46.55.38A8.013 8.013 0 0 0 16 8c0-4.42-3.58-8-8-8z"></path>
</svg>

The 1-color restriction is the reason why a line is used in the react-version and why jakeg's icon with two different greys (to reproduce the gradient effect) cannot give a nice 'active-link'-impression on mouse-over; one would like to get the mountain light up, not the background or the tiny side).

Apart from the overkill for a small button, gradients need 2 colors, one as start and the other for stop (The Codeberg logo uses atm 5x stop-color:#, 1x fill:#). That makes any substitution by a single css-defined color (currentColor) difficult.

In short, for usability of the Codeberg logo as a button-icon, it would be helpful to have a (simple) version that is clear at size 16x16 or 24x24.

As alternatives are available I really cannot care too much about this, being only a messenger. It's up to you do something about it if you want to see an 'official' Codeberg logo as a button in for example footers of webpages.

I am more than happy to test out whatever icon becomes available and give feedback on its applicability.

It seems more constructive to focus on what works than on what wins and the `<svg></svg>` what is on offer 'officially' doesn't work as a button-icon. This works for the react version or the github button ![image](/attachments/15f2aedc-21a6-4918-8d48-a807f6d67cc7) used in the furo theme: <svg stroke="currentColor" fill="currentColor" stroke-width="0" viewBox="0 0 16 16"> <path fill-rule="evenodd" d="M8 0C3.58 0 0 3.58 0 8c0 3.54 2.29 6.53 5.47 7.59.4.07.55-.17.55-.38 0-.19-.01-.82-.01-1.49-2.01.37-2.53-.49-2.69-.94-.09-.23-.48-.94-.82-1.13-.28-.15-.68-.52-.01-.53.63-.01 1.08.58 1.23.82.72 1.21 1.87.87 2.33.66.07-.52.28-.87.51-1.07-1.78-.2-3.64-.89-3.64-3.95 0-.87.31-1.59.82-2.15-.08-.2-.36-1.02.08-2.12 0 0 .67-.21 2.2.82.64-.18 1.32-.27 2-.27.68 0 1.36.09 2 .27 1.53-1.04 2.2-.82 2.2-.82.44 1.1.16 1.92.08 2.12.51.56.82 1.27.82 2.15 0 3.07-1.87 3.75-3.65 3.95.29.25.54.73.54 1.48 0 1.07-.01 1.93-.01 2.2 0 .21.15.46.55.38A8.013 8.013 0 0 0 16 8c0-4.42-3.58-8-8-8z"></path> </svg> The 1-color restriction is the reason why a line is used in the react-version and why jakeg's icon with two different greys (to reproduce the gradient effect) cannot give a nice 'active-link'-impression on mouse-over; one would like to get the mountain light up, not the background or the tiny side). Apart from the overkill for a small button, gradients need 2 colors, one as start and the other for stop (The Codeberg logo uses atm 5x `stop-color:#`, 1x `fill:#`). That makes any substitution by a single css-defined color (`currentColor`) difficult.

So if I understand you correctly, the request is to have a special version that is only one color and very small.

This is what you get from me:

If 42 nodes in an inline SVG are too much, maybe you need to up your scripting game to switch resources and use two smaller versions, or learn a few CSS tricks?

Maybe I'm still missing a key point. But I certainly feel like I'm being asked to outperform hackers in a demo scene challenge, and if I can't – our logo will get vilified.
