Recovery mail is not being send to unactivated account #2126

Background:
Apparently I pasted something unknown in the password box when creating an account instead off the intended password.
So when I try to activate the account I get a wrong password error.
(I tried everything that might have been on my clipboard when creating the account but unfortunately nothing matches.)

When trying the recovery procedure it says it sent a recovery mail but nothing seems to come through, I assume because it is not in the activated state.

So I don't think there is a way to recover (or delete, so you can restart) an account in such a condition at the moment ?

I can confirm.

  • located your other account
  • used the email address to initiate password recovery
  • web page confirms such a mail was sent
  • the mail server does not log a related email

I have a similar issue.
I created an account a year ago. The activation link resulted in a 500 error, so my account never got activated.
When I ask a reset password link, the email never arrives to my inbox.

If you created an account years ago and never activated it, it should have been automatically removed in the meantime. Can you confirm the account still exists?

Uh, I see, you are probably talking about https://codeberg.org/tbalthazar. This is likely a different issue, but still a bug.

@fnetX this is indeed the account. Created a little less than 2 years ago. (I would love to get back that handle btw)

@Enicon I suppose your problem was fixed? You created a new account, right?

Yes, after reading your comment that unactivated accounts are automatically removed after a while, I tried recreating the account to see if it was already cleaned up and apparently it was. So I am good !
Do you have an idea what the period is an unactivated account is kept alive, so other ppl running into the problem and end up in this thread know how long to wait ? Something less than 3 weeks in any case :)

Yeah, it should be around 2 - 3 days.

[cron.delete_inactive_accounts]

Any idea why https://codeberg.org/tbalthazar hasn’t been deleted? Any chance it could be deleted so I could get that handle back?

@tbalthazar2 The account "tbalthazar" is activated.

@fnetX thanks for checking. That’s very strange, cause when I try to reset the password, I never receive any email. I verified the activation email I received on Oct 22, 2023 and the email address is correct. Any idea what might be happening here? 🤔 (I remember getting a 500 error when trying to activate my account 2 years ago and I thought the activation failed)

The account lacks an email address in the database table, but redundantly has one set for the account itself. @Gusted can you take a look? I remember we investigated this before, but I don't recall the conclusion. Can we retroactively fix all affected accounts by making sure there is at least one email address for the primary?
