Hi all,

I have a two weeks old, open ticket in a private repository here on Codeberg.

This issue has some images attached.

This morning when I opened the issue I got this on all of them (7), except one, the one I added lately in a issue update.

image

What's happened?

Is there a way to rescue these images?

Actually they was important documentation images.

Thank you.

UPDATE: testing to copy/paste a new image

Can you provide a link to the issue, even if it is private? Or eventually extract the attachment IDs from the URLs?

In some of these images could be sensitive present information.

How can I do it privately with you?

UPDATE:

@fnetX I sent you an email

Thanks

Hi, it looks like you edited the issue at the time when the images disappeared. Note that you are able to remove image attachments from an issue while editing it. The inline display only references images, they need to remain attached to the image below.

As the only remaining image was added during this edit, I assume you removed the other attachments when uploading the other image. It probably worked at first, because the referenced inline images were remaining on the server (I think they are cleaned asynchronously). But since they were no longer attached to the image, they were removed from the server after a while.

I do not know if we can still restore them.

I'm 100% sure I didn't remove them.

Maye some issue about the name? I attached these images with a copy/paste. As I can see the images uploaded this way keep always the same name: image.png (like the one I attached copy/pasting in the first comment I made in this issue.

Maybe the update deleted the previous references to image.png? I will test it (UPDATE: tested and the first image has not been removed).

It would be great if these images could be restored. I would really appreciate it.

Please tell me is is possible.

Thank you.

I unfortunately can't help as much as Otto can (as he has access to your repository and probably knows much more than me), so please take my attempt to help with a huge grain of salt as I'm just trying to help.

Please understand that our ability to help "as a collective" with private repositories is much more limited.

  1. Just to be 1000% sure, are there any edits, and can you view them by clicking on them? If so, are the images visible in any of the previous versions?

image

  1. Were the file names of the files on your system image.png, or are you saying that both of these pictures have the file name image.png when uploaded?

I know there were some bugs in the editor / file uploader, especially when you "edit" a comment, in some cases some attachments could be lost.

I have fixed some of them in 1.20 (eg: https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/pull/24202 , it has been backported to 1.19.2, I do not know what version Codeberg is running). And I can still see there are some cases which would still cause attachment lost (too complex to describe them here).

The attachment handling is a longstanding problem (technical debt).

@wxiaoguang Great, thanks for joining in to let us know about this. :)

Hi @n0toose thank you very much for your help!

I feel part of this community too, so I understand the enormous value of the help you are giving. I appreciate it enormously, really :)

  1. About the Edits: there are two edited versions, when I click on each of them I can only see them in Write mode, not in Preview mode, so I can see the links to the images in both, but I can not see the actual images in any of them, because not in Preview mode. The differences between the two edits is only the addition of one paragraph of text and an image link in Markdown format, the only one I can see now.

  2. There are many cases in which I copy and paste the image screenshots directly from the Gnome screenshot app, like this:

image

image

This consist in a, copy to clipboard, paste into the comment's text area, so Codeberg automatically uploads the image and gives it a name. If there is more than one image, the image name is image.png for each of them (as visible in the first comment in this issue. I think that they finally gets uploaded into different directories, so it shouldn't be a problem, but maybe this design could contribute to one issues @wxiaoguang is talking about.

Thanks again!

Just for a matter of completeness I want to add that, in my las comment, I added (with copy pate) two screenshot, the ones that are visibles in the bottom part only of the comment.

After the upload (vía paste) I decided to change the images and I copied/pasted the two that are actually into the message body.

Now as visible in the bottom part of the comment, also if I have deleted the first two links (automatically generated Markdown), the images have been uploaded, and are there still there, when the only two images referenced inside the text are these:

I managed to accidentally reproduce this here under v1.20 (I was planning to revisit this issue and ask if it has been fixed after the update anyways), so this is not (fully) fixed yet: Codeberg/forgejo#75

I had an attachment, removed the attachment in a subsequent edit and replaced it with a new copy-pasted image, saved it, and then made one additional text-only edit.

@n0toose I don’t manage to reproduce it, I close the issue now, here, as currently nothing can be done to fix it. It seems to be rare, anyhow.

Haha, I closed this issue 5 days ago and just ran into it here: forgejo/website#896 (comment), but what happened? I don’t know ...
