I've been working on this for a few days, and it's starting to get good results.

This is an unmodifed copy of Nedit, running on an unmodified Motif library. The only changes are via Xresources, done entirely within the expected configuration boundaries as defined by the library.

This is exactly the kind of mild modernisation I personally have in mind. Keep the classic, Motif chiseled look, but with modern font rendering and some nips and tucks here and there. Add in a few nice colour schemes based on existing schemes people already know and love (Solarized, Gruvbox, etc.), and I think Motif can really fill a desire in a world where everyone dislikes modern UI design.
