内容説明

In this comprehensive work, Christoph Sigwart (1830-1904) develops logic as a normative discipline. The task of the logician, as he sees it, is to develop a methodology which can be used to guide research in any area of human inquiry. Like ethics, logic should tell us what we ought to do, and here he develops this thesis in great detail. The rapid development of symbolic logic, which is not normative, led to the neglect of Sigwart's theory, but this book remains important for outlining the road not taken. It is also noteworthy for its extended critical discussion of John Stuart Mill's treatment of induction. This reprint is of the second revised edition, though neither English editon has been reprinted until now.
