Zvezdan: I did not have to pass additional arguments to get readline, the default machinery automaticly picks up libraries in /usr/local. I'd love to have a way to restrict the default compiler and linker search paths to system locations (e.g. exclude /usr/local and /Library/Frameworks), but that's sadly enough not easily possible (and the issue is in the compiler not distutils)
