As recently as Python 2.6.0's release, Python.org had a link to download a disk image with a special newb-friendly installer for OS X. See http://www.python.org/download/releases/2.6/ Now, it's gone in Python 2.6.1, and it was never there for Python 3.0. Which is a pain, because it's really hard to get "readlines" to install just using config/make/install. So, whoever is in charge of making that disk image should make it again.
