Sorry, the fix was by Mathias Ettinger: elif isinstance(argument, _SubParsersAction): return '{%s}' % ','.join(map(str, argument.choices)) I submitted a PR with this patch and a corresponding unit test: https://github.com/python/cpython/pull/26278
