it seems that python-config --libs doesn't detect -lz and appending -lz fixes the problem
- PYTHON_LIBS="`\"${PYTHONCONFIG}\" --libs`"
+ PYTHON_LIBS="`\"${PYTHONCONFIG}\" --libs` -lz"
