I think it would really depend on the particular terminal. Sakura (a Unix terminal using the VTE library, like Gnome Terminal) copied the tab literally:
$ printf 'tab\ttab|sp sp\n'
tab tab|sp sp <== COPIED
$ hexdump -C
tab tab|sp sp <== PASTED
