To try this with the OpenSSL command line client, use this shell command: openssl s_client -connect www.verisign.com:443 -CAfile cacert.pem This provides more detailed error messages than Python provides. "verify error:num=20:unable to get local issuer certificate" is the OpenSSL error for "www.verisign.com". The corresponding Python error is "[SSL: CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED] certificate verify failed (_ssl.c:581)."
