IDLE supports extensions: https://docs.python.org/3/library/idle.html#extensions And that was a user-configuration file that got corrupted somehow. As it's an optional feature, IDLE can work without it. You can use your favourite text editor to compose programs and then use console to run them. It might be more convenient even for smaller programs.
