I'm not sure that micro-benchmarks are revelant for this issue. Hash collisions may have an higher cost than the gain of a faster hash function. Some people feel also concerned by the dict denial of service issue. It would be interesting to compare performances using the benchmark suite: http://hg.python.org/benchmarks/
