As you can see, a stat() is already done on /net/prodigy.
Event if it wasn't done, calling mkdir() ought to trigger the mount.
So this is *definitely* as bug in autofs.

It's not that we don't want to address this, but rather that we want
to avoid introducing hacks to work around OS bugs.
