Tiny review. Two more details: - since it's relatively straightforward to cache the last value returned using a static variable, it might be interesting to use this to make sure that the values returned are indeed monotonic - I'm not a native speaker, but `hires` name bothers me a bit, I'd prefer `highres` (see for example http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/timers/highres.txt, the highres kernel parameter and patch-set name), or maybe `hrtime`
