I've pushed this first part, which is just a code refactoring. I tried to work out a patch for the second part. The tricky thing is because of xml.etree still using doctests. The patch for the tests seems to be enough small and readable. We have small differences between C and Python, about the warnings beeing raised. In general the C implementation do not raise the deprecation warnings. IMHO, this could be fixed later. Still missing is the patch for the documentation.
