Hmm, in http://bugs.python.org/issue7511#msg106420 Tarek appeared to be supportive of the patch. Re DISTUTILS_USE_SDK: I don't think many users are aware of this variable. Also, it is not needed at all; it is sufficient to execute vcvars64.bat manually before running setup.py.
