I've tracked it down. It's caused by KB2467174 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2467174) and I can reliably reproduce it. Here's how to reproduce it: Install *only* the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)" from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?familyid=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&displaylang=en Then, start Windows Update and click "Check for Updates" to get the new C++ 2008 Redistributable update and install that patch. Immediately symbolic links stop working. Then uninstall that patch and symlinks work again. We're still trying to figure out what's causing this problem on my friend's computer. He doesn't have the 2008 Redistributable. |
