Oh, that's surprising. Why %zd is supported but not %zi?
PyUnicode_FromFormatV() supports %d, %ld, %lld, %zd, %i, but not %li, %lli or %zi. Before fixing PyUnicode_FromFormatV(), I fixed pyexpat.c: r87747.
