Seems to be adopted too in *bsd: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/lucid/man2/lseek.2freebsd.html . The feature has patches available too for Linux, but never integrated in mainline kernel, AFAIK. Googling "SEEK_HOLE" is interesting.
