David, to answer your question "How does it behave with the head of the current 2.6 maintenance branch, by the way?", since this bug appears to be in Include/pyctype.h, which file was available only in 2.7+ and 3.x, I don't believe it will reproduce in 2.6 maint branch that doesn't even have pyctype.h. I am also adding Eric Smith, the original author of pyctype.h that got added as a fix for issue5793, to this bug. Eric, I've attached a patch ... can you review it please?

I am also adding Eric Smith, the original author of pyctype.h that got added as a fix for issue5793, to this bug.
