I've just found that:
[1] + foo()
crashes, but:
[1].__add__(foo())
gives:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<pyshell#25>", line 1, in <module>
[1].__add__(foo())
TypeError: can only concatenate list (not "foo") to list
