One more design question. For something like: '<HT{>H}H', what endianness should be used when packing/unpacking the last 'H'? Should the switch to '>' within the embedded struct be regarded as local to the struct?
With your patch, I get:
>>> pack('<HT{>H}H', 1, (2,), 3)
