If the devices are bright enough you've got the solution: Calculate with 3 mA per led and you're fine. If you notice they look nicer when fed by 12V I'd rather add a little transistor and 4k7 base resistor (5-0.7 / 4700 = 1mA Arduino current) to switch 12V, than exchange the 1k led resistor by a smaller one. | |

Based on Ohm's law, if you have a 5V supply, and a 1.8V voltage drop (approximately normal for a red LED) and a 1K resistor, then you expect to draw (5 - 1.8)/1000 amps, which is 3.2 mA. | |
