The glyph type in 3DLDF and its associated commands make it possible to access MetaPost's
glyph features from 3DLDF programs. MetaPost's glyph command returns paths
corresponding to the PostScript paths of characters from a font.
In order for this to work, there must be an entry for the font in a font map
file.
This is the case for all of the Computer Modern and Euler fonts. For some fonts included
in a TeX distribution, there may be no font map file. In this case, it may be possible
to create 3DLDF glyphs by converting the METAFONT code to 3DLDF or by showing the paths
and copying them. Most fonts other than the Computer Modern, Euler and European Modern
fonts are not too complex and don't have much meta-ness
. It would probably
be easier to do this than to try to create a font map file. However, I haven't looked
into the latter possibility yet.
I don't have any plans at the present time to make letter charts for fonts other than the Computer Modern and Euler fonts. However, I may try create glyphs for some symbols that are present in fonts without font map files.
The distribution of 3DLDF already contains a number of letter charts for various Computer Modern and Euler fonts. I have used the glyphs for a number of graphics However, these charts are obsolete. It is now possible to save glyphs to and restore them from the 3DLDF database. Unfortunately, it would not be straightforward to use the existing code in the old letter charts for saving the glyphs to the database, so I will have to create new ones. However, it's not difficult to do this.
Calling MetaPost to access its glyph command and producing output for processing by 3DLDF for more than a few characters takes a noticeable amount of time. Storing the data in the database and retrieving it when needed therefore results in a significant reduction in run-time and an increase in efficiency.
