reasons apply to schools as they do to (削除) everyone.</p>
<p>But there are special (削除ここまで) (追記) everyone. However, the purpose
of this article is to present the additional (追記ここまで) reasons that apply
(追記) specifically (追記ここまで) to (削除) schools. They are the
subject of this article. </p>
<p>First, free (削除ここまで) (追記) education.</p>

<p>Free (追記ここまで) software can save (削除) the schools money. Even in the
richest countries, (削除ここまで) schools (追記) money, but this is a secondary
benefit. Savings (追記ここまで) are (削除) short of money. Free (削除ここまで) (追記) possible because free (追記ここまで) software gives schools,
like other users, the freedom to copy and redistribute the
(削除) software, so (削除ここまで) (追記) software; (追記ここまで)
the school system can (削除) make copies for all the computers
they have. In poor countries, this (削除ここまで) (追記) give a copy to every school, and each school (追記ここまで) can (削除) help close (削除ここまで)
(追記) install (追記ここまで) the (削除) digital
divide.</p> (削除ここまで) (追記) program in all its computers, with no obligation to pay
for doing so.</p> (追記ここまで)
<p>This (削除) obvious reason, while important, (削除ここまで) (追記) benefit (追記ここまで) is (削除) rather shallow. And
proprietary software developers can eliminate this disadvantage by
donating copies (削除ここまで) (追記) useful, but we firmly refuse to give it first place,
because it is shallow compared (追記ここまで) to the (削除) schools. (Watch out!—a school that
accepts this offer may have (削除ここまで) (追記) important ethical issues at
stake. Moving schools (追記ここまで) to (削除) pay for future upgrades.) (削除ここまで) (追記) free software is more than a way to make
education a little “better”: it is a matter of doing good
education instead of bad education. (追記ここまで) So let's
(削除) look at (削除ここまで) (追記) consider (追記ここまで) the deeper (削除) reasons.</p>
<p>School should (削除ここまで)
(追記) issues.</p>
<p>Schools have a social mission: to (追記ここまで) teach students (削除) ways (削除ここまで) (追記) to be citizens (追記ここまで) of (削除) life that will benefit society
as (削除ここまで)
a (削除) whole. (削除ここまで) (追記) strong, capable, independent, cooperating and free society. (追記ここまで) They
should promote the use of free software just as they promote (削除) recycling. If schools teach (削除ここまで)
(追記) conservation and voting. By teaching (追記ここまで) students free software, (削除) then the
students will use free software after (削除ここまで) they (削除) graduate. (削除ここまで) (追記) can
graduate citizens ready to live in a free digital society. (追記ここまで) This will
help society as a whole escape from being dominated (削除) (and gouged) (削除ここまで) by
(削除) megacorporations. Those corporations (削除ここまで)
(追記) megacorporations.</p>
<p>In contrast, to teach a nonfree program is implanting dependence,
which goes counter to the schools' social mission. Schools should
never do this.</p>
<p>Why, after all, do some proprietary software developers (追記ここまで) offer (削除) free samples (削除ここまで)
(追記) gratis copies<a href="#note1">(1)</a> of their nonfree programs (追記ここまで) to (削除) schools
for (削除ここまで)
(追記) schools? Because they want to <em>use</em> (追記ここまで) the (削除) same reason (削除ここまで) (追記) schools to implant
dependence on their products, like (追記ここまで) tobacco companies (削除) distribute free cigarettes: (削除ここまで) (追記) distributing
gratis cigarettes (追記ここまで) to
(削除) get children addicted <a href="#note1">(1)</a>. (削除ここまで) (追記) school children<a href="#note2">(2)</a>. (追記ここまで) They
will not give
(削除) discounts (削除ここまで) (追記) gratis copies (追記ここまで) to these students once (追記) they've graduated,
nor to the companies that (追記ここまで) they (削除) grow up (削除ここまで) (追記) go to work for. Once you're dependent,
you're expected to pay, (追記ここまで) and (削除) graduate.</p> (削除ここまで) (追記) future upgrades may be expensive.</p> (追記ここまで)
<p>Free software permits students to learn how software works. (削除) When
students reach (削除ここまで) (追記) Some
students, natural-born programmers, on reaching (追記ここまで) their (削除) teens, some of them want (削除ここまで) (追記) teens yearn (追記ここまで) to
learn everything there is to know about their computer (削除) system (削除ここまで) and its
software. (削除) That
is the age when people who will be good programmers should learn it.
To learn to write software well, students need to read a lot of
code and write a lot of code. They need to read and understand
real programs that people really use. (削除ここまで) They (削除) will be (削除ここまで) (追記) are (追記ここまで) intensely curious to read the source code of the
programs that they use every day.</p>
<p>Proprietary software rejects their thirst for knowledge: it says,
“The knowledge you want is a secret—learning is
forbidden!” (削除) Free (削除ここまで) (追記) Proprietary software is the enemy of the spirit of
education, so it should not be tolerated in a school, except as an
object for reverse engineering.</p>
<p>Free (追記ここまで) software encourages everyone to learn. The free software
community rejects the “priesthood of technology”, which
keeps the general public in ignorance of how technology works; we
encourage students of any age and situation to read the source code
and learn as much as they want to (削除) know. Schools (削除ここまで) (追記) know.</p>
<p>Schools (追記ここまで) that use free software will enable gifted programming
students to (削除) advance.</p> (削除ここまで) (追記) advance. How do natural-born programmers learn to be good
programmers? They need to read and understand real programs that
people really use. You learn to write good, clear code by reading
lots of code and writing lots of code. Only free software permits
this.</p>
<p>How do you learn to write code for large programs? You do that by
writing lots of changes in existing large programs. Free Software
lets you do this; proprietary software forbids this. Any school can
offer its students the chance to master the craft of programming, but
only if it is a free software school.</p> (追記ここまで)

of schools is to teach (削除) people to be (削除ここまで) good (削除) citizens and good
neighbors—to cooperate with others who need their help. (削除ここまで) (追記) citizenship, including the habit of
helping others. (追記ここまで) In the area of (削除) computers, (削除ここまで) (追記) computing, (追記ここまで) this means teaching (削除) them (削除ここまで) (追記) people (追記ここまで)
to share software.
(削除) Elementary schools, above all, (削除ここまで) (追記) Schools, starting from nursery school, (追記ここまで) should tell
their (削除) pupils, (削除ここまで) (追記) students, (追記ここまで) “If you bring software to school, you must share
it with the other
(削除) children.” Of (削除ここまで) (追記) students. You must show the source code to the
class, in case someone wants to learn. Therefore bringing nonfree
software to class is not permitted, unless it is for
reverse-engineering work.”</p>
<p>Of (追記ここまで) course, the school must practice what it preaches:
(削除) all the software installed by the school (削除ここまで) (追記) it (追記ここまで) should (削除) be available (削除ここまで)
(追記) bring only free software to class (except objects (追記ここまで) for
(追記) reverse-engineering), and share copies including source code with the (追記ここまで)

further.</p>
<p>Teaching the students to use free software, and to participate in
the free software community, is a hands-on civics lesson. It also
teaches students the role model of public service rather than that of
tycoons. All levels of school should use free software.</p>
(追記) <p>If you have a relationship with a school —if you are a
student, a teacher, an employee, an administrator, a donor, or a
parent— it's your responsibility to campaign for the school to
migrate to free software. If a private request doesn't achieve the
goal, raise the issue publicly in those communities; that is the way
to make more people aware of the issue and find allies for the
