この規格は,次の事項を規定する。
(1) 文書記述言語SGMLの抽象構文。

 備考 文書記述言語SGMLは,文書の構造及び属性の記述を表現し,

 更にマークを翻訳するための情報も表現する。

(2) 抽象構文を特定の文字又は数値に結びつける規格参照具象構文及び各種の具象構文を定義するための基準。
(3) 適合SGML文書。
(4) 適合SGML文書の処理能力及びその文書中のマークの誤りを認識する能力による適合SGMLシステム。
(5) この規格で規定しないデータ(画像,図形又は書式付きの文)を適合SGML文書の中に含める方法。

備考

1. 次の事項は,この規格の対象外とする。
   
   1. 標準の,文書型,文書体系又は文書構造の特定又は規定。
   2. 適合SGMLシステムに関する実現,体系又はマーク誤りの 取扱い規定。
   3. 適合SGML文書の作成方法の規定。
   4. 適合SGML文書を格納し又は交換するための,データ列, メッセージ交換システム,ファイル構造,その他の物理的表現 及びこれらのために適合SGML文書を変換する文字集合又は符号 化方式の規定。
   5. 適合SGML文書に含まれる画像,図形,書式付きの文などの データの表現又は記法の規定。
