We believe that students should have opportunities to engage with the world around them. Through challenging expeditions, enriching service projects, and skill-building leadership retreats, YIS offers hands-on learning experiences for students to apply knowledge, build resilience, and lead with confidence.
At YIS, class size is between 16 and 22 students so every learner’s perspective is genuinely heard and valued. Inquiry, creativity, guide our curriculum, encouraging students to explore their personal interests, take responsibility for their learning, and discover their own path to success.
Our international student community represents more than 50 nationalities and faculty from 26 countries – we embrace the many ways people express themselves, from language background to individual learning styles. By weaving principles of diversity and inclusion into every aspect of school life, we create an environment where everyone can feel valued and successful.
By maintaining an environment where students feel supported and valued, we give them the tools they need to live confidently, learn holistically, and lead with empathy. That’s why safeguarding is woven into every aspect of our community. All staff undergo regular training in Child Protection, and we adhere to rigorous international standards for safe recruitment.
Opened in January 2022, our 14,685 square meter campus integrates bright, flexible learning spaces, state-of-the-art facilities, and communal hubs. Every space is a learning space and is designed to encourage exploration, collaboration and community. Blending our host culture with global values, our campus creates an inclusive environment for every learner.
Our educators are part of our community of learners, reflecting and adapting right alongside our students. With an average tenure of 6.6 years – and over half holding advanced degrees – our teaching staff are subject-level experts with a deep commitment to nurturing the growth, well-being, and potential of every learner.

Our ELC promotes student curiosity, creativity, and play as the foundation of joyful, lifelong learning for ages 3–5. We believe every young child has a hundred languages for expressing their thoughts and ideas. In the ELC, learning is inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach® and guided by the IB Primary Years Program.
Our inquiry-based program develops caring, globally minded learners who question, reflect, and act on their understanding of the world. YIS Elementary students learn to confidently explore possibilities, embrace diversity, and make positive changes in their communities. Learning in the Elementary school is seen through the lens of the IB PYP’s transdisciplinary units with a strong focus on social-emotional growth.
Expeditions are a key experiential opportunity at YIS. Through clear learning intentions, students can connect wilderness engagements to classroom concepts and personal growth. Students face challenges that promote resilience, collaboration, and a deeper respect for nature. Student expeditions are a chance to go outside comfort zones, reflect on successes and challenges, and return to campus with new skills, stronger relationships, and a richer understanding of themselves.
As a truly Japanese international school, YIS provides a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Japanese culture through an integrated programme. Although we primarily learn in Enlgish, from the ELC to High School, students engage in activities, workshops, and community partnerships that celebrate the richness of our host culture. Activities like tea ceremonies, calligraphy, festivals, and traditional cultural experiences allow students to cultivate appreciation, respect, and a deeper understanding of Japan that they can cherish forever.
