Let’s start the week with a little show and tell. We’ve already covered the projects you think are way too cool in “Big up yourself.” But what we really want to see are your most hideous design blunders. Projects that have somehow pushed through the motions and are out in real life for everybody to see. Projects that make you cringe when you look at them. Projects where you would like to pull an “Allan Smithee” and avoid the ridicule.
So, don’t be shy, let us see your worst mistakes. After all, that’s the best way to learn. From the laughter and sneers of your peers.
I'll get things rolling with this beauty. A logo (if you can call it that) I did while I was still at school for a cable show called "PC on TV." As far as I know the pilot never made it. Thank God!
On Jan.27.2003 at 08:47 AMOh God I can't believe I am going to admit this. Oh well. Here goes. Three years ago I started work on our corporate entity's redesign of their e-commerce venture. After a grueling 4 months of arguing and discussions why you don't just copy your competitor's site among many other hot topics we turned out this polished excrement. booksamillion
In the two and a half years since that "design", it has been completely basterdized to the point of poop in a potty. I have since tried to distance myself so far from this project as to not even be in the same solar system. Until now. I am so ashamed. At least I don't have to take responsibility for the daily graphics.

Polished excrement. That's funny!
Speaking of web sites, this one I really despise. Done at marchFIRST, I had one day to design it. Not that I'm using that as an excuse. I had to use those nasty round buttons on the left, because it had to tie in with another site. It's not that bad looking, but it's pretty lame. Suntor Water group. I can't believe it's still up.
On Jan.27.2003 at 12:25 PMOk, not necessarily embarrasing, but I thought I'd take a quick look at see what 'antique' sites I had worked on are still up...

circa 1996. My first commercial site, if I remember correctly. Note the elegant use of clip art and photoshop effects ;o)
On Jan.27.2003 at 12:48 PMThis MST site goes along with the one that I posted in the big ups list, though they are both terrible, ugly and hard to use, I really have a hard believing this is still up, and useable. Great loading screen that does nothing, btw. I did this 1997-98 maybe, one of the first site I ever did, (and sad to say I was pretty proud of the fact I worked on it from beginning to end all by myself, ug) I wonder if anyone of there riders actually uses this site? And if they do, I apologize.
On Jan.27.2003 at 01:48 PMHere's a live link to Darrel's:
Sadly, I have no proof of my worst--a newsletter for the Marriott Beverage University done at a former job. No, the "MBU" is not a real place--it's training for people who serves drinks at Marriotts all over the country. It was full of liquor product shots (supplied by some terrible branding agency), stock photos, and fake typewriter fonts (y'know, for that "collegey" feel). To heighten the "fun" I laid pages out to resemble college-ruled paper--it was either that or scan the real thing. Oh, and it was orange, yellow, and burgundy. The horror. I think it never got made.
On Jan.27.2003 at 02:05 PMSometimes you just have no say in what goes down...
On Jan.27.2003 at 04:26 PMMan I can't believe I'm showing this, but I suppose its worth a laugh. My very very very first web site. I did this. Beat that.
On Jan.27.2003 at 05:48 PMGeesh ... this is embarassing. This is one of the packages I wish no one had seen. Judging by record sales, maybe no one did :)
Deluxtone Rockets on Tooth & Nail Records.
Check out that great color match between inlay and booklet. Ughhh. This was done in my 'winter of darkness'. Don't ask.
On Jan.27.2003 at 07:10 PMoh yes... i think the URL tells a story all it's own.
enuff said.
On Jan.27.2003 at 08:52 PMIt's a tough call between Kevin's and Soulshot's web sites. I would favor Kevin's because of the animated GIF. Pretty smooth!
On Jan.28.2003 at 09:44 AMHooo.. what a great subject. While I was a student, I did this: Wayne State University Center for the Arts and Public Policy
On Jan.28.2003 at 01:04 PMI think we've all fallen pray to the threshold filter at some point : (
