Towards that end, Nikon has built a 1.25x
teleconverter specially to go along with the 800mm behemoth and is the first TC an ED glass element.
However, if the reader asks: Which is better to use, the extension tube or the
teleconverter? That will depend on the preference of the user.

You can boost the effective focal length of lenses and telescopes with a 2x or 3x
teleconverter and an eyepiece or a Barlow lens.
Ernie Pfannenschmidt's article on using an old, surplus camera
teleconverter, or TC, to make a Barlow lens (February issue, page 129) certainly caught my eye.
